The Union only has a week to scope agreement with the US customs administration. Amicable conclusion of the dispute with the Trade Secretary will now be negotiated by EU Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič in Washington.
The diplomat, who is liable for trade relations in the European Commission, will talk to Secretary Howard Lutnick, as the EU authorities are inactive hoping that Donald Trump will ease the approach to customs policy towards the EU. Especially since only 2 weeks ago, he said he would stay steadfast. In order to encourage the American side to talk, Brussels even announced that it would hold the introduction of retaliatory duties by mid-April, including 50% of the US whiskey rate.
