American turn 180 degrees: Poland must learn to stand on its own feet

The fresh U.S. National safety Strategy, dated “November 2025”, and published by the White home on December 5, 2025, is not a cosmetic change, but a fundamental turn in American abroad policy.

This concept paper “Trump Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine”, clearly signals that the United States return to their sphere of influence, leaving Europe alone with its geopolitical problems. For Poland and the full continent, this is an emergency signal: Time for strategical autonomy and pragmatic revalue of alliances.

“Trump Corollary”: American sphere of influence in the 21st century

“National safety strategy 2025” paper straight and bluntly declares back to Monroe’s doctrinebut in a modernized form. The concept of “Trump Corollary” assumes that The Western Hemisphere is an exclusive U.S. sphere of influence, and the main nonsubjective of American abroad policy is “Restore the American primacy” in this region.

“After years of neglect, the United States will recover and increase the Monroe Doctrine to reconstruct American preeminence in the Western Hemisphere, and to defend our homeland and our access to key geographies through the region.”

This means that the US will be

  • actively destruct the influences of “non-Hemispheric competitors” (mainly China) from Latin America,
  • control key resources and supply chains and
  • militarize the region to halt migration and drug trafficking.

It is simply a return to the politics of power and influence zones, where ideology gives way to pragmatic interests.

Europe alone on the east flank: The end of the “war without end” era

While the US focuses on its “yard”, Europe remains with problems on its own. The paper clearly signals The end of the “war without end” era and engagement in distant conflicts. Russia, although inactive present in the strategy, is portrayed not as a major U.S. military adversaries, but as a European problem that should be neutralised diplomatically.

“It is simply a core interest of the United States to negociate an expeditious assignment of hosts in Ukraine, in order to stabilize European economies, prevent unified evacuation or expansion of the war, and reestablish strategical stableness with Russia...”

This conviction is an emergency bell for Poland and the full east flank of NATO. The US no longer intends to be Europe's main safety guarantor in confronting Russia. Instead, the precedence is “restore strategical stableness with Russia” – which in practice means that Europe must find its own way to live with a powerful neighbor.

Necessity of rationalisation: A fresh Approach to Russia

In a fresh reality where the American protective umbrella becomes little and little sure, Europe, and especially Poland must abandon wishful reasoning and adopt a pragmatic approach to Russia. This does not mean surrender, but rationally neutralize tensions. Since the US is pursuing “strategic stability”, Europe cannot afford to proceed its policy of confrontation alone.

This means that we must build our own European deterrent system, but besides open diplomatic channels and searching for modus vivendi with Moscow. It is simply a hard but essential task in a planet where unconditional support from outside the Atlantic can no longer be expected.

Strategic autonomy: Europe in a multipolar world

The U.S.'s turn towards Monroe's doctrine is part of a larger trend – moving from the single-polar planet to the multi-polar world. In this fresh game, Europe must learn to play itself. Since the US is focusing on confronting China, Europe should usage this situation to strengthen its relation with another key players.

Region/StateImpacts for Europe
ChinaInstead of blindly following the American policy of confrontation, Europe should build its own pragmatic economical relations with Beijing.
IndiaAs a increasing power and counterweight for China, India is simply a natural strategical partner for Europe.
Saudi ArabiaA key player in the energy marketplace and the mediate East region; Europe must build its own independent relations with Riyadh.

Building strategical autonomy is not only a substance of defence, but besides of economy, technology and diplomacy. Europe must become 1 of the poles in a new, multipolar planet – not just a peripheral addition to the American sphere of influence.

The End of an Age

The fresh U.S. safety strategy is the symbolic end of an era that began with the end of the Cold War. The American hegemon abdicates as a “world police officer” and focuses on its own interests. For Europe and Poland it is simply a painful but sobering lesson. Time for adulthood – to build your own strength, pragmatic alliances and take work for your own safety. There's no another way.
