Can the superb growth of a painting career be crossed by one, somewhat frivolous image? Absolutely. This was proved by American artist John vocalist Sargent (1856–1925). In 1882, his image “Madame Gautreau (Madame X)” made him turn distant from him almost the full French beau monde.
