These aircraft will first operate on domestic routes before transitioning to international service. The Flagship Suite features expanded seating, premium amenities, and a differentiated experience for select business-class passengers.

American Airlines (AA) has been facing a shortage of long-haul aircraft since retiring its Airbus A330, Boeing 767, and Boeing 757 fleets during the pandemic. The arrival of new Boeing 787-9 aircraft will address this gap while introducing a refreshed premium cabin experience.

Key features of the new Boeing 787-9 include:

  • 51 business class suites (up from 30 on previous models), offering passengers more space and privacy.
  • 32 premium economy seats, an increase from the previous 21, catering to growing demand.
  • Bulkhead-row business class seats, marketed as ‘Flagship Suite Preferred Seats,’ which include:
    • Nest Bedding mattress pad, throw blanket, and memory foam lumbar pillow.
    • Exclusive Nest Bedding pajamas.
    • An upgraded amenity kit featuring additional skincare items.

The increased number of premium seats is expected to positively impact airfares, upgrade availability, and award ticket access.

Initial Routes Rollout

Aviation industry insider JonNYC has revealed that American Airlines’ Boeing 787-9 with the Flagship Suite will initially operate domestically before being deployed on international routes. The expected rollout plan includes:

  • Domestic Route: Chicago (ORD) to Los Angeles (LAX) round trip, allowing for crew familiarization and operational testing.
  • First International Route: Chicago (ORD) to London Heathrow (LHR), where the aircraft is expected to enter transatlantic service.

Although the airline has yet to confirm specific frequencies or start dates, sources suggest that among the three daily Chicago–London flights, the late-night departure is likely to feature the new suites first.

The airline has not disclosed whether other hubs, such as Dallas/Fort Worth or Miami, will receive the aircraft subsequently.

Passenger Experience

The introduction of the Flagship Suite on the Boeing 787-9 marks a major upgrade for American Airlines’ premium travelers. Key benefits include:

  • More Business Class Availability: Increased seating capacity will improve upgrade chances and reward seat availability.
  • Enhanced Comfort: The Flagship Suite Preferred Seats offer an elevated in-flight experience with exclusive amenities.
  • Competitive Edge: This rollout strengthens American Airlines’ premium service, aligning it with global competitors.

As these aircraft enter service, passengers on initial routes can expect a more luxurious and spacious travel experience.

Bottom Line

The increased premium seating, 51 business class and 32 premium economy seats versus prior configurations which could improve upgrade availability and award space, particularly on competitive routes like Chicago (ORD)–London (LHR).

However, the emphasis on premium inventory may lead to fewer economy seats, potentially raising baseline fares in peak seasons.
