The flight later declared an emergency and diverted to Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA).

The flight was operated by a 20-year-old Embraer ERJ-170, registered as N794JH.

Similarly, American Airlines Flight AA1300 executed an emergency return to Miami International Airport after crew members detected an electrical burning odor in the cabin during its journey to George Town, Cayman Islands. The Boeing 737 aircraft, which departed Miami at 4:00 PM UTC on Friday, January 24, 2025, halted its ascent at 22,000 feet before initiating the return protocol.

The flight crew implemented fuel conservation measures during the return journey, resulting in a heavy landing at Miami International Airport at 4:43 PM UTC. The Federal Aviation Administration confirms the safe landing occurred at 11:45 AM local time and has launched an investigation into the incident.

Technical details reveal the aircraft involved was a Boeing 737-823, registration number N907NN, equipped with dual CFM 56-7B engines. The 12.3-year-old aircraft operates on American Airlines’ twice-daily Miami-George Town route.

American Airlines coordinated an alternative aircraft to transport affected passengers to their destination. The replacement flight arrived in George Town three hours and 23 minutes behind the original schedule.
