Recently, in these pages I mentioned Santa Claus and expressed my doubts about the authenticity of this character. I don't know if he existed, but the legend of his rescued soldiers belongs to 1 of the most beautiful hagiography. An equally colorful and charming figure is another saint, of whom I have no doubt. It is the 3rd century Roman Valentinus, bishop of the Umbrian city of Terni, who broke the imperial ban on giving vows to young conscripts between the ages of 18 and 35. Valentinus was thrown in prison, where he met a blind guard's daughter.
