Recently, in these pages, I mentioned Saint Nicholas and expressed my doubts about the authenticity of this figure. I do not know whether he existed, but the legend of the soldiers he saved is 1 of the most beautiful hagiographies. Another saint is equally colorful and charming, and I have no doubts about his existence. He is the third-century Roman Valentinus, bishop of the Umbrian city of Terni, who broke the imperial ban on marrying young conscripts between the ages of 18 and 35. Valentinus was thrown into prison for this, where he met the blind daughter of a jailer.
