According to information from the national Prison Service, the 47-year-old opposition leader died during his stay in penal colony No. 3 in the Jamal-German Autonomous District. Kira Yarmysh, a spokesperson for Navalny, has not yet confirmed this tragic event, stating: “The national Prison Service of the Jamal-German Autonomous territory declared the death of Alexey Navalny in IK-3. We do not presently have any confirmation of this information. Navalny's lawyer is presently heading for Charp. As shortly as we have any further information, we will transmit it immediately."

Alexey Navalny has been in prison since 2021

Alexey Navalny has been in prison since 2021, first in a penal colony of increased security, and since 2023 in a penal colony of general security. In 2022 he was sentenced to 9 years in prison on charges of fraud and court paintings. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Kremlin has intensified its run to suppress and silence the national opposition. During his speech in the court, Navalny opposed the war, criticizing Putin and calling the invasion “fool” and “based on lies”.

In 2020, Russian peculiar services undertook an unsuccessful effort to poison Navalny. In August 2023, the Moscow court issued another conviction on Alexey Navalny. The trial was held behind closed doors, and journalists were not allowed into the courtroom. They could only observe the process on screens in a peculiar media room. The court sentenced Nawalny to 19 years imprisonment in a high-security penal colony for directing an extremist organization.

Navalny's conviction met with criticism from the global community. NGOs and human rights defenders consider him politically motivated.
