Boeing Struggled in 2024

Boeing’s commercial aircraft deliveries plummeted to 340 jets in 2024, marking a 35.6% decrease from 528 deliveries in 2023. The decline contrasts starkly with Airbus’s performance, which delivered 766 aircraft during the same period.

Production metrics reflect similar challenges, with Boeing completing first flights for 256 aircraft in 2024, down from 425 in 2023. Multiple setbacks impacted these figures, including labor disputes and heightened safety concerns.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers strike concluded in November following contract negotiations, allowing Boeing to resume production across all programs by December 17. However, the Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 incident, involving a door blowout on a 737 MAX, prompted increased quality inspections.

FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker announced permanent enhanced oversight of Boeing’s operations, emphasizing the need for fundamental cultural changes prioritizing safety over profits. The regulatory scrutiny extends to the 777X program, which faces ongoing certification challenges.

The appointment of CEO David Calhoun signals Boeing’s commitment to addressing these operational and cultural issues, generating cautious optimism for recovery in 2025.
