COLOGNE- The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has granted certification for multiple higher thrust Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engine models, enhancing the operational capabilities of the Airbus A321XLR and A321neo.

This validation follows prior approval from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and includes models designed to optimize performance under various operational conditions, such as hot-day takeoff and reduced go-around thrust.

EASA Certification Airbus A321XLR P&W Engine

EASA formally validated the PW1133G1, GR, GAR, and G1R variants of the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engine on February 7.

These engine models, designed for the Airbus A321neo and A321XLR, feature optimized thrust configurations tailored for specific operational needs.

Each variant offers a unique combination of performance enhancements, including hot-day takeoff boost and reduced go-around thrust, which is managed by the aircraft’s electronic engine control system.

Reduced go-around thrust delivers lower power output than the maximum rated takeoff thrust, enhancing efficiency and fuel savings.

The approval from EASA follows the FAA’s certification of the same engine models on December 12, 2024.

This dual validation ensures compliance with both European and U.S. regulatory requirements, allowing seamless deployment across multiple global markets.

In addition to the A321XLR engine approvals, EASA has certified two other PW1127 engine variants G1A and G1B which is used on the Airbus A320neo.

These engines, which feature reduced go-around thrust for improved efficiency, were previously certified by the FAA in August 2023.

The certification aligns with Airbus’s ongoing strategy to equip its aircraft with more fuel-efficient and performance optimized engine options, strengthening the operational capabilities of its single aisle fleet.

Airlines Adoption

European low-cost carrier Wizz Air (W6) is among the airlines selecting the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engine for its A321XLR fleet.

The airline’s choice reflects the growing demand for fuel efficient and high thrust engines, which are crucial for optimizing long haul narrowbody operations.

As more airlines transition to new generation aircraft like the A321XLR, certified engine variants such as the PW1100G series will play a key role in expanding operational flexibility while ensuring compliance with global regulatory standards.
