PTI sources revealed that a bomb threat note was discovered in one of the aircraft’s lavatories, prompting immediate safety protocols. A passenger spotted the message reading “There is a bomb in the flight” written on a note inside the toilet and alerted the crew, according to a Sahar police official.

Air India confirmed that the Boeing 777-300 ER aircraft landed safely in Mumbai by 10:25 am local time. “A potential security threat was detected mid-flight on AI119 operating Mumbai-New York (JFK) today, 10 March 2025. After following the necessary protocols, the flight air-returned to Mumbai, in the interest of the safety and security of all on board,” the airline stated.

Law enforcement officials are investigating the incident. “Nothing suspicious has been found (so far) and we are conducting the investigation,” a police official told PTI, adding that authorities were in the process of registering an FIR against an unidentified person in connection with the matter.

The airline has rescheduled the flight to depart on March 11, 2025, at 5:00 am, according to ANI. Air India has provided affected passengers with hotel accommodations, meals, and other necessary assistance during the disruption. The company stated that its ground staff is working to minimize passenger inconvenience caused by the incident.

Another Air India flight, operating from Chicago to Delhi, was forced to return to Chicago due to a technical malfunction, according to an airline spokesperson quoted by ANI. The incident occurred on March 6, 2025.

Air India confirmed that flight AI126 returned to Chicago after encountering technical difficulties during the journey. All passengers and crew disembarked normally upon landing at Chicago’s airport.

“AI126 operating Chicago to Delhi on 6 March 2025 air-returned to Chicago due to a technical issue. Upon landing in Chicago, all passengers and crew disembarked normally and have been provided with accommodation to minimise inconvenience,” the spokesperson stated.

American Airlines (AA) flight AA292 diverted to Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) following a security threat during its New York (JFK) to New Delhi (DEL) journey. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner carrying approximately 285 passengers departed JFK on February 22, 2025, for what was originally planned as a 14-hour direct flight to Delhi.

Flight tracking data from FlightRadar24 shows the aircraft executed a mid-air turnaround over Turkmenistan before redirecting toward Rome. The aircraft, registered as N840AN, had completed the majority of its planned route, traversing the Atlantic Ocean and European airspace before reaching Turkmenistan.

Rome’s selection as a diversion point indicates a strategic response to the security situation, as American Airlines maintains established infrastructure and support operations at this location. This operational presence allows for more efficient handling of the unexpected situation.
