Air India’s Unfair Practices

The employees working for the Air India Engineering division (do not confuse with AI Engineering Services Limited [AIESL] which is a government-owned MRO) have made the following claims:

  1. Air India engineering staff said that the salary they are getting is below industry standards. Further the Cost to Company (CTC) structure is not crafted properly.
  2. The employees also said that salary they are getting are uneven. The pay is not up to the mark of their designated roles.
  3. Employees working during the night are not getting the night allowance. Further, many staff including technicians working at night have not received any allowance since October 2024, which means there is a delay in pay by over 3 months. They shared these issues with management, however, they have not responded to them with any positive feedback.
  4. Those employees whom Air India management has promoted to senior-level positions are yet to receive their revised letters.
  5. Employees are struggling with basic amenities such as meals, and pick up and drop off services post-merger.
  6. They hardly get any response after writing dozens of emails each month.
  7. When some employees apply for reimbursement, they reject their claims and this is in excess for ex Vistara employees.
  8. As Aviation A2Z previously reported in its exclusive article, There is a noticeable difference in pay structure between Air India’s existing staff and newly merged Vistara engineering staff despite having similar job designations and roles. This is true for Air India Express engineering staff.
  9. The employees who are eligible for promotion based on their experience and work level are not been promoted for the last 2 years, almost since Tata acquired Air India from the Indian government and managed their own engineering department.
  10. Also, there are discrepancies in seniority positions, especially among employees managing widebody fleets.
  11. There is the inclusion of performance-based pay, which employees see as one of the biggest corporate scams in the Indian aviation industry.
  12. ex Vistara employees have made serious allegations against Air India management that they are facing unfair bias despite being eligible for promotions. Further, there is partiality in selecting employees for certification courses.
  13. Some posts are being demoted such as AME grade used to be a managerial level position but its now assistant manager post.

My Take

These are some of the serious allegations by employees and it has come from verified sources. We request Air India senior management personnel to look into it and resolve them as quickly as possible.

Further, we request our India’s civil aviation authority, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) senior executives and members look into it.

We all have seen unfair and illegal practices across various sectors due to weak labor laws and that’s why employees are the one who suffers a lot.

I hope Air India management and DGCA look into this matter and solve it as soon as possible.

Also, aircraft engineering people are working to form strong and impeccable unions to enforce strict industry standards and fight against malpractices as mentioned above, raise their voices against injustice, further demand industry standard pay in sync with inflation, and more.

Note: The points mentioned above are shared with us by Air India engineering staff and they has being edited in the proper readable form and are purely their views.

Editor Note: This is the personal view of an author and does not represent the views of publication.

We will soon make a post on the salary of engineering staff working in airlines and MROs in India. So keep supporting our website as usual.
