AUCKLAND- Air New Zealand (NZ) will suspend flights from Christchurch (CHC) to Gold Coast (OOL) from November 2025 to March 2026 due to engine issues and market conditions. Affected passengers will be rebooked via Auckland (AKL) to ensure continued connectivity.

The airline’s transparency about engine challenges and proactive rebooking demonstrate a commitment to passenger trust.

Air New Zealand Route Cancellation

Air New Zealand (NZ) announced the suspension of its Christchurch (CHC) to Gold Coast (OOL) service for 5 months, from November 2025 to March 2026, affecting a key trans-Tasman route.

The decision, communicated to travel agents on May 6, 2025, stems from ongoing engine maintenance issues, fluctuating demand, and market conditions.

The airline will maintain 3 weekly flights on this route until October 2025, after which passengers will be rerouted via Auckland (AKL).

Route Suspension Reason

The suspension reflects broader fleet constraints, particularly with the airline’s Airbus A320neo and Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleets.

Pratt & Whitney’s 2023 directive to inspect 700 A320neo engines worldwide for a rare metal defect, combined with premature wear in Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines on 787s, has reduced aircraft availability.

Engine inspections, which can take up to 300 days, have forced Air New Zealand (NZ) to prioritise high-demand routes, impacting services like Christchurch (CHC) to Gold Coast (OOL).

Impact on Passengers

The suspension affects a small number of passengers with bookings during the peak summer travel period. Air New Zealand (NZ) is proactively rebooking these customers on flights via Auckland (AKL), ensuring connectivity to the Gold Coast (OOL).

The airline’s chief commercial officer, Jeremy O’Brien, emphasised a commitment to reliable service despite the change.

Rebooking via Auckland (AKL) may extend travel times, but Air New Zealand (NZ) is working to minimise disruptions. Passengers can check updated itineraries through the airline’s website or contact centres.

Route Adjustments

In February 2025, the airline ended its seasonal Auckland (AKL) to Seoul Incheon (ICN) service, which typically operates from October to March. The final flight departed on March 29, 2025, with no resumption planned until engine availability improves.

Similarly, non-stop Auckland (AKL) to Chicago (ORD) flights were halted in 2024, with a tentative resumption by late 2025.

These adjustments reflect the significant operational complexities caused by engine maintenance delays. Air New Zealand (NZ) is collaborating with Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce to expedite inspections and replacements, but global supply chain constraints prolong the process.

The airline continues to prioritise domestic and high-demand international routes to optimise its reduced fleet capacity.

Strategies for Recovery

Air New Zealand (NZ) is implementing measures to mitigate the impact of fleet constraints, including schedule adjustments and enhanced maintenance planning.

The airline is exploring leasing options to bolster capacity during peak periods and investing in predictive maintenance to reduce future disruptions. These efforts aim to restore full service on routes like Christchurch (CHC) to Gold Coast (OOL) by April 2026.

By maintaining open communication, Air New Zealand (NZ) seeks to balance operational efficiency with customer satisfaction, even as it navigates unprecedented maintenance hurdles.
