QUEENSTOWN- Air New Zealand (NZ) has canceled 10 flights to and from Queenstown Airport (ZQN) due to severe crosswinds affecting the region on April 14, 2025. The disruption comes amid challenging weather conditions that have impacted multiple carriers’ operations.

Strong wind shear and crosswinds have forced several airlines to take precautionary measures, with JetStar (JQ) and Qantas (QF) also reporting diversions. Passengers are advised to check their flight status before traveling to the airport.

Air New Zealand Cancels Queenstown Flights

The cancellations represent a significant disruption to Air New Zealand’s scheduled services at one of New Zealand’s busiest tourist destinations.

According to airline officials, the weather conditions intensified during the afternoon hours, prompting operational safety decisions across multiple carriers.

“Our teams are actively rebooking affected customers,” an Air New Zealand spokesperson stated. “We’re hopeful that conditions will ease by evening as forecasted, allowing us to resume normal operations.”

The airline has recommended that all passengers monitor the Air New Zealand mobile application and website for real-time updates on flight status changes. The airline’s customer service teams have been mobilized to assist affected travelers with alternative arrangements.

Impact on Other Carriers

The severe weather has affected operations beyond Air New Zealand. JetStar flight JQ293 from Auckland Airport (AKL) to Queenstown was forced to return to its origin after encountering difficult conditions.

Similarly, Qantas flight QF121 from Sydney Airport (SYD) was diverted to Christchurch Airport (CHC).

Queenstown Airport officials have confirmed the disruptions via social media, warning travelers about the ongoing situation. “Please check the flight tracker on our website or with your airline for the latest information before heading to the airport,” the facility advised through its official Facebook page.

Passenger Advisories

Aviation experts note that Queenstown’s mountainous terrain makes its airport particularly susceptible to wind-related disruptions. The airport, situated between Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables mountain range, often experiences challenging crosswinds that can affect aircraft operations.

Travelers with flexible itineraries are advised to consider postponing their journeys if possible. For those with urgent travel needs, monitoring airline communications channels and preparing for potential delays or cancellations is strongly recommended.

The meteorological forecast indicates that wind conditions may improve by evening, potentially allowing for the resumption of normal flight schedules. However, the backlog of canceled flights may continue to affect travel plans into the following day.

Similar Incidents

Air New Zealand encountered significant operational challenges on December 8, 2024, when extreme weather conditions forced six flights to return to Auckland Airport (AKL). Strong winds in Wellington (WLG), Christchurch (CHC), and Queenstown (ZQN) created unsafe landing conditions across New Zealand’s most important air travel corridors.

The affected routes—Auckland-Wellington, Auckland-Christchurch, and Auckland-Queenstown—represent the nation’s busiest air connections and link the country’s four largest airports, amplifying the disruption’s impact on domestic travel networks.

MetService issued multiple weather warnings as northwest gales and heavy rainfall swept across both islands. The deteriorating conditions rendered landings unsafe at multiple destinations simultaneously.

Flights NZ439, NZ481, NZ551, NZ623, NZ547, and NZ635 all executed return flights to Auckland after failing to land at their scheduled destinations, according to reports from 1news. Wellington experienced additional disruptions with numerous departing flights canceled entirely due to sustained high winds.

Air New Zealand implemented immediate passenger support protocols, rebooking affected travelers on subsequent available services. The airline provided multiple service recovery channels, including digital options through their mobile application and website.

The carrier took preemptive action by alerting evening passengers departing Wellington about potential disruptions before they reached the airport. All affected customers received options to reschedule their travel to different dates without incurring change fees.
