Against cutting religion out of schools. A strong protest of believers in Warsaw!
date:21 August 2024 Editor: Anna

On Wednesday, August 21, a protest was held in Warsaw in Castle Square against changes in the teaching of religion in schools. The Manifestation was organized by the Association of secular catechists, and the initiative supported another movements supporting conventional Catholic and patriotic education.
A very large group of people gathered at the demonstration. Catholic and patriotic environments were definitely dominant, although there were no shortages of provokers. Many atheists and anticlericals walked in the crowd, expressing disapproval of God, the Church, and spiritual lessons at school. However, the protesters did not have a crucial impact on the demonstration.

This has worked effectively, starting with happening, which would indicate a close link between European culture and religion. However, it is hard to talk of good moods. Both the speeches and the talks gathered were full of expressions of concern for the future of our country, whose Catholic culture is trampled on by the Government of the Civic Coalition, the Left and the PSL. The assembly pointed out that giving the Ministry of Education into the hands of an highly ideologicalist politician of the Left, Barbara Nowacka, is simply a manifestation of an open depolonisation programme and above all decatolization of the Polish school.
The Katechets besides pointed out that the effort to reduce the number of spiritual lessons in schools was not consulted at all. In the meantime, it is about the professional future of many teachers; Minister Barbara Nowacka, they emphasized in talks, treated them as if they did not deserve the designation of average teachers, completely ignoring their situation and fate.

Minister Nowack spoke of changes in spiritual lessons in July, announcing that they would reduce their dimension to 1 per week under the regulation. The problem is that spiritual lessons are not compulsory in Poland, and it is hard to tell what specified a step would be about: parents who do not want their children to attend these lessons do not gotta send them. Hence, it seems that the only motivation of the government is ideological considerations – and by the way the anticipation of saving money in the budget of the Ministry of Education.

Nowacka has already issued a regulation allowing the collection of children from different age groups in spiritual classes; this was besides the subject of criticism at the demonstration due to the fact that it was emphasized that specified a solution effectively prevents catechization – children prepare for different sacraments, are at different levels of spiritual sensitivity and knowledge.

The president of the Association of the Secular Catechets, Piotr Janowicz, besides informed of the submission to president Andrzej Duda of the request to address the issue of the regulation by the Minister Nowacka, possibly sending them to the Constitutional Court.

On the PCh24 tv channel, you will be able to watch the coverage of the protest in defence of spiritual lessons at school in the evening.
