Since German unification, hegemons in German politics have been the Chadetic CDU/CSU block and social democrats from the SPD. These 2 mass parties (Volkspartei) formed federal-level ruling coalitions and dominated the polls. Although in fresh years we have observed the erosion of their popularity, in their best times both of them were able to exceed 35% of support, and their combined consequence frequently reached 2 thirds of the vote.
