Prior to the 58th session of the UN Commission on Population and Development, consultations were held which were dominated by organisations promoting alleged reproductive and sexual rights. The Ordo Iuris Institute, which actively participated in the meeting, highlighted worrying trends in which ideological demands obscure real global challenges specified as combating poorness and improving access to healthcare.
The dominance of left-wing organisations in the discussion
During the consultation before the 58th session of the UN Commission on Population and Development, the subject of which was to guarantee wellness and well-being for all social groups, experts from the Ordo Iuris Institute took the floor. The representatives of the Institute stressed the key function of the household as a basic social institution and the request to respect the sovereignty of states in matters of public health. However, as they noted, the discussion was dominated by organisations promoting alleged reproductive and sexual rights, which focused on demands on universal access to abortion and sexual education.
– "We see one more time how the debate on alleged reproductive rights sends out real global challenges, specified as combating poverty, access to basic wellness care and improving household surviving conditions" – commented Julia Book from the Ordo Iuris global Law Center.
Abortion as "a tool to combat poverty"?
Participants in the consultation included organisations specified as the Center for Reproductive Rights, which presented abortion as a tool for combating poorness and social inequality. According to their arguments, the anticipation of deciding to have children allows women to better plan their work and individual life, which affects their economical and wellness situation. The organization besides criticised the rules on the protection of life in force in Poland, claiming that they restrict women's rights.
Experts of Ordo Iuris have, however, pointed out that abortion demands are not based on investigation or existing global law. They cited, among others, the findings of the 1994 global Conference on Population and improvement and subsequent UN documents, which indicated that abortion should not be promoted as a method of household planning.
Real challenges in the shadow of ideology
Ordo Iuris announced active participation in further work on the motion for a resolution to be discussed in March. The organisation intends to monitor the improvement of the final papers of the UN session to guarantee that they include the protection of life and household rights. According to experts, the debate on alleged reproductive and sexual wellness should not obscure crucial global problems specified as combating poorness or improving access to healthcare.
