A tomato monument will be erected in Iwiem, according to the Belarusian government agency. The monument is to be built by the end of July, so that the participants of the festival planned for the beginning of August can enjoy its view.
Though it would seem that potato is simply a national good Belarus, the country has decided to pay its respects to another vegetable — tomato. Propaganda Belta has announced that in the village Iwie in the Grodno region a monument will honor him.
Local government has already written contest for the statue design. Not only sculptors and architects can participate, but anyone who makes an interesting proposal. The Agency emphasises that the engagement of educational institutions, students and teachers is welcome. Applications will be accepted by 1 April.

The tomato monument is to stand on the waterfront of the town pond in Iwiem. Not without reason – that's where it happens all year festival held in honor of this vegetablewhich falls in early August.

This year, the event is to begin with a solemn march through the city center. The guests will then be able to participate in the performance and competition for the best subject costume. The festival will besides be accompanied by a play for children and a lottery. The most crucial point of the day is, however, tomato battle.
BelTA indicates that Iwie is celebrated for its high-quality crops of tomatoes of various species and varieties.
