Donald Trump changed his decision about customs. Now the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has spoken on this issue.


Several hours after the president of the United States announced a fresh decision, Ursula von der Leyen spoke on the matter. On Thursday, April 10, the head of the European Commission published an entry on the X platform.

In her first words, she expressed her satisfaction with Donald Trump's decision to suspend the common duties. She pointed out that this is an crucial step towards stabilising the global economy, as predictable conditions are crucial for trading and providing supply liquidity. "Customs are taxes that only harm businesses and consumers," she pointed out.

Ursula von der Leyen stressed that the European Union remains committed to constructive negotiations with the US, aiming for seamless and mutually beneficial trade.

"At the same time, Europe focuses on diversifying its trade partnerships, working with countries liable for 87% of global trade and sharing our commitment to free and open exchange of goods, services and ideas," she added.

The head of the European Commission has besides pointed out that the Union aims to "remove barriers in our own single market". She added: "This crisis has made us aware of 1 thing: in times of uncertainty, the single marketplace is our anchor of stableness and resilience."

Finally, von der Leyen declared, "My squad and I will proceed to work day and night to defend European consumers, workers and businesses. Together Europeans will come out of this crisis stronger".



Trump amends the customs decision


As we wrote on Temat.pl, there was a return on Wednesday in the US. Donald Trump announced that he would rise duties – but only for China, and importantly reduce them for another countries.

"In view of the deficiency of respect that China has shown towards global markets, I hereby rise the work imposed on China by the United States of America to 125 percent with immediate effect," president Donald Trump wrote on the fact Social portal on Wednesday.

As he besides reported, "on the another hand, and on the basis of the fact that over 75 countries contacted United States representatives, including the Departments of Commerce, the Treasury and the Office of the Trade typical to negociate a solution to issues relating to trade, trade barriers, customs (...) authorised a 90-day suspension (customs-ed.)". Thus, during this period the duties will be 10%.
