50 years ago, Jacek Pałkiewicz, later to discover the origin of the Amazon, gained worldwide fame by crossing the Atlantic Ocean as a voluntary castaway. In the annals of navigation history, the expedition was noted as pioneering. This 44-day experience was utilized by NASA researchers curious in the problems of isolation and the limits of human endurance.
