50 years ago, Jacek Pałkiewicz, a later explorer of the Amazon source, gained worldwide publicity, defeating the Atlantic Ocean as a voluntary survivor. In the annals of shipping history, the expedition was noted as a pioneer. This 44-day experience was utilized by NASA researchers curious in the issues of isolation and limits of human endurance.
