A sensational twist in the election for German Chancellor. It would seem that the sure-fire candidate, Friedrich Merz, did not receive the required majority in the first vote in the Bundestag on Tuesday. The candidate of the three-party coalition – CDU, CSU and SPD – was supported in a secret ballot on Tuesday by 310 MPs. Six votes were missing.
