A fresh state holiday. National Memorial Day - what does it commemorate?
National Day of Memory about Poles - Victims of Genocide, which will be celebrated on 11 July, is to be a tribute to our compatriots murdered by Ukrainian nationalists from the OUN and UPA on the east Borders of the Second Republic of Poland. It was that day in 1943 that the alleged "bloody Sunday" happened, erstwhile the Ukrainian Povs dancing Army attacked Polish villages, killing thousands of people - including women and children. According to estimates of historians, over 1 100 1000 Poles died from Ukrainian nationalists in 1939-1946. The fresh vacation is not only to remind us of the tragic events of decades ago, but besides to respond to the demands of the border communities, which for years have demanded the authoritative commemoration of the victims.

Although July 11 will not be a day off from work, it is of large symbolic importance. Historians and activists point out that for decades the subject of crime has been ignored. Now the state officially pays tribute to victims who died only due to the fact that they were Poles. This is an crucial step, although not deprived of political emotions - especially in the current geopolitical situation.
