Boat: a museum alternatively of a field and shops? Let us celebrate the victims, but not at the expense of the inhabitants – the boaters appeal

We received a letter from residents of the settlement at Przemysłowa Street in Łódź, where the Museum of Polish Children in Łódź is to be built – victims of totalitarianism. The thought of appropriate and valuable commemoration – the inhabitants have no uncertainty about it. However, the way of implementing the thought leaves much to be desired. In addition, no 1 has always asked the residents. So they organized themselves and effort to defend what is crucial to them. How can we reconcile the past with the present? Local Firepoint.

Dear Editor,

After eighty years since the creation of the German concentration camp for Polish children, the Ombudsman for Children's Rights, Mikołaj Pawlak [his word ended on 14 December 2023.Monika Horna-Cieślak – ed.], made an initiative to establish the Museum of Polish Children in Łódź – victims of totalitarianism.

Minister of Culture and National Heritage Prof. Piotr Gliński appointed Dr. Ireneusz Maj as manager of the museum (since June 2021). Children and Polish youth from 2 to 16 years of age were imprisoned in the camp under cruel conditions. Witnesses say that even a fewer months of infants were kept. It is estimated that about 3,000 children went there, and respective 100 lost their lives as a consequence of hunger, illness and inhuman treatment – including torture and forcing them to work hard beyond the child's strength. The museum aims to spread cognition about the camp and celebrate the memory of the children there.

And here's the problem. The place where the camp was actually located was built after the war.

Housing blocks, shops, greens, school grounds were created. The industrial street, on the section in which the camp was located, is narrow, without departure, with difficulty passing 2 cars.

The building of the erstwhile commandant of the camp was preserved, already acquired by the museum, where the permanent exposition is to be built. In addition, a property located other the commandant's building was purchased (the adjacent another renovated building is not within the scope of the museum director, although it was put up for sale and would constitute a compact museum complex).

It is planned to demolish the shops, choice up the field school and place the museum's office and parking lot in this place.

In October 2023, after many protests by residents, the manager of the museum issued a message saying: “We are not going to participate in the fresh media campaign... We decided not to usage the area and to quit the property behind the school.” The right to usage the field by children, the manager called it a chase?

The first way of expressing empathy, which should be characterized by a individual holding the position of manager of the museum, as he himself said, dealing with a very hard and delicate subject.

What about satisfying the most urgent needs of old and sick people? Where are they to supply basic foodstuffs and individual hygiene?

Have these people spent the war in paradise? Don't they have the right to a dignified old age? The manager only thinks of a three-story building with a cafe, the tallness of a five-story block (about 15 meters high), as we learned at the almost "secret" gathering in October 2023 (the announcement of the gathering placed at the last minute on the door of the store on 1 side was almost invisible).

The director's logic is amazing: the museum is to be at the site of the erstwhile camp, but is not curious in the building adjacent to the purchased property. He expresses compassion for erstwhile tiny prisoners, but he does not care about the destiny of children and old people.

He buys the home with taxpayers' money, but wants to teardrop it down – it is simply a deficiency of respect. He promised that before the shops were demolished, fresh ones would be built in a somewhat different place.

Why, then, increase the investment costs to liquidate stores? Wouldn't it be better to leave them to the residents and build a museum where fresh shops would stand? The manager insists that this place is already outside the site of the erstwhile camp. It's not about recreating the camp's old appearance, so it can't be close the camp?

The memory of martyrdom will be smaller? There's a statue of the Broken Heart, there's small mini-moons within the camp. On the monument there are always celebrations commemorating these tragic events on 1 June. There is the Memorial Chamber at simple School No 81 located close the monument.

The museum is to be built in 2024, and the construction of shops is not visible! The letters sent to the president of Łódź did nothing, even though about 2.5 1000 signatures were collected.

City officials should perceive to the locals, and the chief is just worried about what he'll tell the Germans who come to the camp and ask why it's so dirty.

We're tense about the looks of the street, too. It's not just a hole, it hasn't been cleaned yet. There were 2 solid baskets, but they stood short. They were exported – there was no 1 to empty them.

The election to be held in April 2024 for the president is unspeakable, even though she intends to run. During the last, to meet with voters organized at the fresh Theatre, she was the only 1 who failed, and inactive won. And this disregard of people has been for the full term.

Our case has intervened. Whole Forward Association and Trace Association. erstwhile articles in Electoral Gazeta and said on TVP and tv Toya and on radio. Unfortunately, we don't know where it came from. I think a large parking lot facility and 50 employees won. And who's gonna pay for the museum's maintenance later? The wages alone will amount to about PLN 250 1000 per month. And the another costs?

Can't 3 broken chairs, as the manager himself said, that the remainder of the camp can be accommodated in a smaller facility?

Is it possible to scope young people in a different form than to bring her to the museum to learn about history?

We, the protesters, offered another place for the museum, close the statue of the Broken Heart. The area belonging to the city, on the outskirts of the park, with good access and, what is crucial – right next to the erstwhile camp border. A appropriate celebration of the victims’ memory, however, does not mean turning the full settlement upside down. We besides want to emphasize that for older people regular reminding about specified dramatic events, for any of them – personal, is an additional trauma. The stubbornness of the museum manager is definitely not due to rational reasons. Yes, we are delicate to the savage treatment of children. Yes, we have a memory in our hearts.

We don't know how many millions this investment will take. The erstwhile minister had a gesture, unfortunately from our money. He most likely felt that no 1 would dare criticize the thought of creating specified a museum. But at what cost and at whose cost? That's another subject.

When we outlined the matter, we presented the feelings of ourselves and others.

As long as the pavilions stand – another destiny met the school at Harcerska Street, from which only a pile of rubble remains – everything is to be saved.

There's a museum and pavilions. 1 doesn't regulation out the other.

From what we've calculated, the word of manager Ireneusz Maj's word of office ends, nomen omen, in May. He's been stressing us out for 3 years. He built nothing. And if he had adopted a good strategy, the building around the monument would have stood. Mission good, imagination failed, and strategy buried everything. possibly the fresh manager will be more human.

Yours sincerely.
