Comments on the incidental in violation of Russian airspace drones over Poland are not silent in the German press. Questions arise about NATO's position, US president and fear of escalation.
Tighten sanctions
"The only consequence to Putin would now be tougher sanctions," writes the diary "Süddeutsche Zeitung". Commentary author Florian Hassel writes that the latest Russian attack on 1 of the government buildings in Kiev should have given US president Donald Trump a clear knowing that Putin is cheating him. "Russian ruler wants no peace, but further war. In order to remedy this, sanctions are essential – especially after the deliberate provocation of Poland – a NATO associate – with the aid of a drone".
"However, the White home wants something another than confronting Moscow," we read. "It begins to feel like Vladimir Putin would gotta detonate an atomic bomb over US territory before Donald Trump decided to impose severe sanctions on Russia". According to the author, this could be, among another things, the creation of a no-fly region and an active participation in shooting down Russian drones.
The call for a more severe hit in Moscow remains valid not only for Trump. "If Ukraine had yet received a Taurus maneuvering rocket from Berlin, Kiev could possibly have destroyed the illegally built Kerchen bridge leading to the illegally occupied Crimean Peninsula. It would be a language Putin understands," writes "Süddeutsche Zeitung".
"Drone greetings"
The "double Putin War" is besides written by "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung". "NATO should send Putin a letter of thanks for the drone greetings he sent from Moscow. This provocation has clearly shown where 1 of the largest gaps in the North Atlantic Alliance's defence line lies. Putin will continue, with expanding intensity, to test whether the Alliance truly has the will, as he one more time promised, to defend all square inch of its territory," writes Berthold Kohler.
The author adds that in military terms respective countries, including Germany, react, sending additional fighters to defend Polish airspace, which is simply a "sign of applicable solidarity with Warsaw". "The mobilisation of these machines besides reveals how inexperienced NATO – and especially Germany – is in defence of drones" if it uses costly fighters. "The West must yet build a rocket shield and a wall against drones with full determination," we read.
Russia's attack on NATO inevitable?
The situation is besides commented by the German regional press and local newspapers. The "Badische Zeitung" diary of Baden-Württemberg proposes that "NATO could respond and capture Russian drones and missiles in future already in the buffer region over western Ukraine". "This would better defend your own airspace. The Ukrainians terrorized by Russia would besides benefit from this. Putin is counting on him to cross the red lines with impunity. He should be wrong," we read.
And the Cologne paper "Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger" asks if Russia's attack on NATO is imminent? "This current question is asked by many people, especially in the Baltic countries and Poland. However, sometimes the behaviour of cold blood helps to dispel fears," writes the journal, referring to the ongoing Russian-Belarusian maneuvers "Zapad".
"If we rationally compare the situation during the «Fall 2021» and «Fall 2025» exercises, we will announcement that the exercises in 2021 were 5 to six times larger than this year. At the time, about 200,000 soldiers participated in the exercises, presently there are 30-40 1000 of them. With so fewer troops, the probability of Russian attack on NATO is close to zero. Especially since the Kremlin wouldn't be able to replenish its supplies. 90 percent of Russian combat troops are occupied in Ukraine" – we read.
