Almost 68 million hryvians were to build shields to defend the energy object from drones. Instead, the money is gone, and the safety has never been created. The case was revealed by the safety Service of Ukraine together with the police and the prosecution. It's another scandal that strikes trust in a country that fights heavy for Western money.

Money for shields that aren't there

The Ukrainian services reported the detection of another case of the removal of public funds. This time, it's about nearly 68 million hryvnia, which were expected to fund shields protecting 1 of the power facilities from drone attacks. The facility lies in the south of the country, in the Nikolay Oblast. The case is handled jointly by the SBU, the National Police and the prosecution.

The mechanics was simple. According to investigators, the company that got the large advance didn't get to work. The shields remained only on paper, and the millions donated vanished without trace. At this phase of the proceedings, the contractor shall be treated as a fishy alternatively than a convicted party. Investigators' findings inactive request to be confirmed in court.

Stealing that weakens defense

This is not just a misdemeanor. The drone shields have a real task. They defend power stations and power stations from Russian unmanned workers who have been methodically destroying Ukrainian infrastructure for months. Any unbuilt shelter means an object more susceptible to a hit, and consequently, a hazard of power outages for residents and industry.

Corruption in this case translates straight into defense. The money that was expected to strengthen energy in practice weakened it. The perpetrator of specified a course, if the wine is confirmed, works in the favour of the opponent more effectively than many Russian drones.

Corruption as a Second Front

The affair from the Nikolai territory is not isolated. Ukraine has been struggling with corruption for years, which is becoming peculiarly dangerous in war conditions. Further scandals, from overpriced contracts to mistrusted funds, undermine the trust of Western partners backing the defence of the country.

For Poland and the full Union, it is simply a real matter, not a moralist matter. The West transfers immense resources to Kiev, besides from the money of the Polish taxpayer. all scandal revealed raises a question of control over these funds. It should be pointed out reasonably that this peculiar substance has been detected by the Ukrainian services themselves, which shows that the surveillance mechanisms are working.

Kiev is not susceptible in this fight. After 2014, specialised anti-corruption institutions were established and the settlement of fraud became 1 of the conditions for rapprochement with the European Union. The problem is that the scale of the operation is inactive beyond control. The war created hundreds of fresh opportunities for abuse: urgent tenders, advanced advance payments and orders executed in a hurry, without average procedures. Each fresh scandal is so a test whether Ukrainian institutions keep up with the ingenuity of thieves.

Internal enemy

The war isn't just at the front. It is besides played in offices, tenders and in the accounts of companies entrusted with public money. The mistrust of energy defence funds strikes the state at its most delicate point. The question of whether Ukraine will be able to deal with the interior enemy before this cost is paid by powerless residents remains open.
