The European Union one more time reaches into the pockets of the associate States to finance aid to the flag Ukraine. This time we are talking about a giant debt package worth EUR 90 billion. Supporters of this solution argue that it is essential to keep the Ukrainian economy and further defend against Russian aggression. However, critics answer that the costs of this policy will be borne by European taxpayers, including Poles, for years. Moreover, Kiev is ungrateful and worships the UPA genocidals.
PLN 500 million per year for Ukraine. According to the assumptions adopted, Ukraine will not bear interest costs related to the fresh EU debt to it. This burden is to be distributed only among the associate States of the European Union. This means that part of the account will besides go to Poland.
The experience so far shows the scale of the problem. In the case of an earlier EU debt to Ukraine worth EUR 18 billion, the yearly cost of interest for Poland is estimated at around PLN 110 million. If akin proportions are applied to a fresh programme worth EUR 90 billion, the yearly debt handling costs could increase to as much as PLN 500 million.
However, this is only 1 side of the medal. The second is the capital itself. Polish participation in the full task can be estimated at about PLN 12 billion. Theoretically, these measures would be recovered by the future Russian war reliefs or usage of frozen Russian assets. The problem is that there is presently no real mechanics to guarantee that specified funds are obtained on a scale that corresponds to EU commitments. Nobody wants to take work for stealing Russian assets. Reparations from Russia are an even bigger dream, especially since Putin wins on the front.
The question is so increasingly raised whether European taxpayers will yet be paid by Russia. The past of global reparations shows that processes of this kind are highly complicated, long-lasting and burdened with tremendous political risks.
The position of Polish political groups represented in the European Parliament is besides controversial. Euro MPs associated with Law and Justice, civilian Coalition, PSL, Lewica and Poland 2050 voted in favour of granting the loan. Only the Euro MPs of the Confederation have argued against it.
For opponents of Ukraine's backing in the current formula, this is evidence of the existence of a cross-party consensus of political elites, which agree to further burden Polish public finances. Supporters, on the another hand, answer that Ukraine's support is an investment in the safety of Poland and the full of Europe, and the costs of omission could be much higher.
The biggest problem is not that Poland helps Ukraine. The point is that billions of zlotys flow to a state that inactive cannot be clearly separated from the cult of the perpetrators of the Volyn massacre. Polish taxpayers are expected to pay another 100 million zlotys, while in Ukraine there are inactive statues of people liable for crimes in Poles. It is hard to have a more bitter definition of “thankfulness”.
