On June 4, 1989, the first partially free parliamentary elections were held, culminating in the grand triumph of Solidarity. Their consequence was the collapse of communism and political change throughout the russian bloc. "We had to break the old order to make a fresh order (...) the situation was safer then than now", said erstwhile leader of the Gdańsk Shipyard "Solidarity" and erstwhile president Lech Wałęsa during the celebrations organized in Gdańsk Shipyard.
