Bishop Valladolid and president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference reported that the canonization process of Queen Isabella is progressing. At the same time, the hierarch admitted that for many years the erection to the altars of the queen, who ended the conquist, was held back. The reason was the Vatican's doubts about the exile of Jews from the kingdom by the devout monarchy.
Archbishop Luis Javier Argüello spoke about the current state of the beatification process during the legislature of Isabella Catholic: a conference organized at the Catholic University of Avilia. The archdiocese of Valldadolid has for decades favored the taking of the Spanish queen to altars. As the clergyman assured, the proceedings are now "in advancement and active", and the long-standing interruption in the process is already in the past.
The pause in the beatification process, as Archbishop Argüello explained, was dictated by the decision of not the Dicteria of Canonization Affairs, but the Secretariat of State of the Holy See. As the bishop explained, the Vatican has shown in this case “the pastoral wisdom” ...
In this way, the hierarch defined the suspension of proceedings after 1990 due to the fact that the Sephardians were exiled from Spain during the regulation of Isabella and Ferdinand of Aragon. As the clergyman explained, the State Secretariat wanted to make a “more detailed evaluation of the expulsion of Jews”. Between 1990 and 2003, there were further requests from Spanish bishops to proceed the process, but it was essential to wait in connection with the “deep reflection on this event” recommended by the Holy See.
Many years of beatification and canonization processes in the Church are mostly normal. The time to wait for them to be resolved decreased after the reforms of Pope John Paul II. However, processes proceed for many years due to the essential care.
