date:25 May 2024 Editor: Anna
Ladies and gentlemen,
On May 25 we celebrate the global Day of Heroes of Combating Totalitarianism, dedicated to the memory of those who bravely opposed totalitarian regimes and fought for freedom, justice and human dignity. This is simply a unique chance to honor those who have opposed oppression and injustice in their regular lives.
It is besides the 76th anniversary of the tragic death of the captain Witold Pilecki, 1 of the bravest and most devoted heroes of Polish history. On May 25, 1948, officers of the safety Office (UB) murdered Pilecki in the Warsaw prison in Mokotów, ending the life of the man who sacrificed everything in the fight for free Poland.

Witold Pilecki was a soldier, a social activist and an independent activist, constantly fighting for Poland's sovereignty, from an early age. In 1920 he participated in the Polish-bolshevik war, and then in 1940, after the outbreak of planet War II, he was voluntarily imprisoned in the German Auschwitz concentration camp, where he organized the opposition movement and reported to the Allies about the situation in the camp. They were among the first to inform the planet about the Holocaust and the mass crimes committed by the Nazis.
After his escape from Auschwitz, Pilecki continued to fight in the Warsaw Uprising, and after his fall he was imprisoned in Germany. The liberation from the POW camp in 1945 gave him the chance to return to Poland, which was under russian control. Pilecki did not, however, lay down his arms – he engaged in anti-communist activities, collecting information about the situation in the country and passing them to the West.
In May 1947 he was arrested by the safety Office. He was tortured and brutally interrogated, but he did not betray his associates, which is why to this day he is simply a symbol of courage and integrity. On May 25, 1948, in a prison in Warsaw's Mokotów, he was executed with a shot in the back of the head.
The death of Captain Witold Pilecki was a symbol of the brutality of the communist regime, which did not tolerate any form of resistance. For years the memory of Pilecki was forbidden, and his heroism deliberately forgotten. Only after the fall of communism, its past began to return to the consciousness of Poles. Today, Captain Witold Pilecki is widely recognized as 1 of the top heroes of the Polish past of the 20th century. His life and dedication are an inspiration for the next generations. Posthumously, in 2006 he was awarded the Order of the White Eagle.
76 years after his death, Pilecki's legacy is eternally alive and inspiring. The steadfast attitude, courage and dedication in the conflict for freedom are a model for all who value independence, dignity and truth. The anniversary of the death of captain Pilecki is an chance to reflect on the past of Poland and remind about those who gave their lives for our freedom.
The heroes of that time, thanks to dedication and determination, contributed to the fact that present we can enjoy a free, independent and sovereign country. Poland raised patriots who did not hesitate to sacrifice their lives for the fight for free Homeland. Józef Piłsudski, Kazimierz Sosnkowski, Emil Fieldorf "Nil", Jerzy Dąbrowski, Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Stefan Paweł Rowecki "Grot", and Stanisław Józef Bronisław Kasznica "Stanisław Wąsacz" and many others, resisted totalitarianism, both Nazi Germans and communist forces of resistance.
We must besides not forget those who fought in a little spectacular way, but with equal determination. People who ran secret schools, printers, organized strikes, as well as those who hid the persecuted, endangered their lives and their families, and Polish citizens who spilled blood for the Homeland.
May 25 is simply a day of deep reflection and tribute to those who fought against oppression and injustice. It is besides a reminder that defending freedom and human rights requires constant commitment and courage. Let us remember the heroes of the past, learn from their experiences, and support those who are guarding our fundamental values today.
Sincerely,
